About Us

El Aeropuerto de Scorpion Bay is a newly opened airport in Baja California Sur, Mexico, situated roughly two thirds of the way between Tijuana and Cabo San Lucas. This airport’s multi-year development was spearheaded by two pilots from Southern California, Fred Borrelli and Phil Benham.

“I’ve been flying twins for almost three decades and have owned seven [Cessna] 310’s during that time. When I stepped up into the 421, a cabin-class airplane, I was able to realize it was easy for me to get behind as I entered my seventies.

About Airport

Montgomery Field Airport Flight Services

The airport, originally known as Gibbs Field, opened in 1937 with a single runway. In 1940, William (Bill) Gibbs leased the airport to Ryan School of Aeronautics to train Army Air Corps cadets to fly. The City of San Diego purchased the airport from Gibbs in 1947.

On May 20, 1950, the City of San Diego named the airport Montgomery Field in honor of John J. Montgomery, who is credited with making the first controlled flight in a fixed wing aircraft. Montgomery’s first glider flight took place in the Otay Mesa area of San Diego in 1883.

On Jan. 28, 2016, the City of San Diego Council passed a resolution changing the name of the airport to Montgomery-Gibbs Executive Airport to honor Bill Gibbs and establish a new vision by demonstrating a commitment to the flying public of providing high quality services and facilities.
