El Aeropuerto de Scorpion Bay Standardized Operating Procedures
For Pilot Use
- Pilots must land at a designated Mexican airport of entry (Tijuana, Mexicali, Ensenada, San Felipe, Loreto, San Jose del Cabo, Los Cabos) prior to proceeding to SBY.
- Member pilots will carry a copy of the Temporary 180 day Permit to Operate (attached PDF) for proof to authorities of airport legitimacy.
- Pilots can file from the airport of entry Direct to SBY. Pilots need to carry enough fuel to fly to your destination, circle, and land with enough fuel to fly to Loreto 65 nm plus normal VFR reserves. No fuel or services at SBY.
- RWY 26. Make right hand traffic pattern to the airport only! Very important. Hazards to flight immediately south. (towers and obstacles to the south of the airport). Do not fly over coastline South of the Airport. Please minimize your time over the city to avoid noise impacts. The wind sock and segmented circle are on the North side of the airstrip.
- When landing to West, on the Downwind you can align with a water tank and a small arroyo you will see heading down wind. Good spacing
- Turn Base when crossing the north road from town that goes to Cadeje.
- Turn Final no later than the baseball park and the paved road leading into town (Avoid overshooting final! Towers on the south side of the runway.)
- Runway is flat and smooth for the first 2200 ft then breaks ever so slightly to a 1% down hill ( slightly past the hangers). Runway remaining markers are on the posts pilots side at 1000 ft increments
- RWY 8. Make left hand traffic to the airport only! Very Important. Hazards to flight immediately south. (towers and obstacles to the south of the airport). Do not fly over coastline South of the Airport. Please minimize your time over the city to avoid noise impacts. The wind sock and segmented circle are on the North side of the airstrip.
- When landing to the East, turn base over the sand dunes and align with the runway for a stabilized approach. At touchdown you may not be able to see the opposite end of the runway due to a slight uphill inclination (1%) the first 1000 ft RWY 8. Runway remaining markers are on the posts pilots side at 1000 ft increments.
- All aircraft will park and tie down on the compacted ramp area just West and in front of the hangers. (caution areas outside the front of the hangers soft). No run up pads currently available at SBY so carefully evaluate your aircraft at arrival and perform preflight activities accordingly to local conditions.
- 48 hr Notification will be given to the Scorpion Bay Hotel front office prior to your departure to facilitate Airport airstrip preparations.
Departure:
- Departure RWY 26. All aircraft departing SBY RWY 26 will fly runway heading to the coast line prior to turning on route and continue climb to destinations.
- Departure RWY 8. All aircraft departing SBY RWY will make an immediate LH turn to Hdg 360 best rate of climb 2500 ft agl prior to turning on route and continue climb to destinations.
